Ryobi RY401140 Review

The RY401140 is a plain 21-inch 40V self-propelled mower with two 6Ah batteries and a claimed 70-minute run. Discontinuation and the recall mean it is a model to verify, not to shop for.

RY401140 review

Ryobi RY401140 identified

RY401140 is the model number of the Ryobi 40V HP Brushless 21-inch Self-Propelled Mower Kit. It sits beside the RY401150, which Ryobi sells as the Cross Cut multi-blade version. Ryobi’s page for the RY401140 is marked discontinued, so this Ryobi RY401140 review treats it as a model you will meet used, on clearance or already in a garage.

A recall notice issued February 6, 2025 lists the RY401140US among affected units, so safety status is the first thing to check.

Power and batteries

The mower uses a 40V HP brushless motor. Ryobi says it gives more power than a 163cc gas mower, a pitch comparison with no measured output behind it. The kit includes two 40V 6Ah batteries and Ryobi claims up to 70 minutes of runtime. A third-party database also notes integrated LED fuel gauges, but we could not confirm that on Ryobi’s own page.

Drive and deck

Self-propel is rear-wheel drive. Ryobi’s page does not publish a speed or a deck material. Cutting width is 21 inches with seven height positions from 1.5 to 4 inches on a single-point adjuster. Bagging, mulching and side discharge are all possible according to the database listing, and the Ryobi page shows a pass-through bag for emptying clippings mid-mow.

The page does not say how many blades the deck has, so we do not claim a blade system for this model. If you need that detail, check the manual for your serial.

Size and storage

Weight is 74 lb in the database spec table and about 75 lb in its own FAQ, so we give about 74 to 75 lb. Handles fold with one touch so the mower stands upright in a corner of the garage, which suits small storage spaces.

Warranty, recall and verdict

Ryobi pages describe 5-year limited coverage on 40V tools in general, though the RY401140 page we read only links out to a warranty page, so confirm the terms for this unit. The recall notice describes a push-on connector in the powerhead that can overheat, and the remedy is a free replacement 21-inch mower from TTI after you stop using the unit.

Choose this mower only after confirming the serial number is not in the affected range or that a replacement has been issued.

Buying information

Where to buy

Warranty

Ryobi's RY401140 page links to a general warranty page without stating terms. Ryobi's RY401150 page lists 5 years on the tool and 3 years on batteries for 40V tools, so confirm the terms for your unit.

Depreciation and resale

No published resale figures, and recall coverage will likely depress used value.

Ownership

Common problems

Spec-based limits: the recall concerns an internal connector that can overheat, and Ryobi's page lacks speed, weight, deck and warranty detail.

Maintenance

No gas or oil. Clear the deck after mowing, check the blade and keep batteries indoors. Follow the recall remedy if the serial number is covered.
