Toro Z Master Review

The Z Master is the best-built zero-turn Toro makes for people who mow every week. It costs much more than the TITAN, so buy it only if you will use the hours and hydraulics.

Z Master review

Toro Z Master: the commercial line

The Toro Z Master is Toro’s commercial-grade zero-turn family. It covers the 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000 and 6000 Series, and the differences between them are big: engines from 24.5 to 38 hp gross, decks from 52 to 72 inches, speeds of 10 to 12 mph and weights from about 1,000 to over 1,300 lb.

Because it is a family, this review treats the Z Master as a line. Toro lists the only price we could confirm, $9,599 for the 52-inch 2000 Series (77283), and the 4000, 5000 and 6000 pages show no mower price at all, so you need a dealer quote for those.

Engines

The 2000 Series uses a Toro V-twin at 24.5 hp and 708 cc. The 4000 and 5000 Series use a Kawasaki FX801V-class V-twin at 25.5 hp and 852 cc, and the 6000 Series steps up to Kohler Command PRO EFI engines at 26.5 hp and 38 hp or a 37 hp Vanguard EFI. Toro states that actual output is lower than the gross numbers.

Deck and hydraulics

TURBO FORCE decks on the models we checked are 7-gauge steel, with sizes of 52, 60 and 72 inches. Cutting height runs from about 1.0 or 1.5 to 5.5 inches. Hydraulics use Hydro-Gear ZT-3400 or ZT-4400 units or unitized pumps and wheel motors, with travel speed from 10.0 mph on the 2000 to 12.0 mph on the 4000 HD and 6000 Series.

Frames on the 5000 and 6000 are 3×1.5-inch tubular steel, and fuel tanks grow from 7 gallons on the 2000 to 12 gallons on the 5000 and 6000.

Comfort and features

Most models have a suspension seat and armrests, adjustable dampened grips, folding ROPS and an hour meter, and the 3000 MyRIDE adds the MyRIDE platform. The 4000 adds USB and phone holders. The 6000 Series 72980 has an Oil Guard system with 500-hour oil intervals, a feature that matters to commercial crews.

Warranty and who it is for

Warranties as printed on Toro’s pages are 4 years or 1,000 hours on the 2000, 5 years or 1,250 hours on the 4000, 5 years or 1,200 hours on the 5000 and 5 years or 1,400 hours on the 6000. Several pages contradict themselves on small details, so ask your dealer to confirm the exact configuration.

The Z Master makes sense if you mow acreage regularly, run a lawn care business or just want the heaviest-duty option. A TITAN is cheaper and plenty for most homeowners.

Buying information

Where to buy

Warranty

As printed by Toro: 2000 Series 4 years or 1,000 hours; 4000 Series 5 years or 1,250 hours; 5000 Series 5 years or 1,200 hours; 6000 Series 5 years or 1,400 hours. Confirm with your dealer.

Depreciation and resale

No published resale figures. Commercial-grade zero-turns generally hold their value better than entry models, but we have no Toro-specific data.

Ownership

Common problems

Spec-based limits: price transparency is poor, with only the 2000 Series priced online, and some pages disagree on weights and deck details.

Maintenance

Commercial machines need regular grease, hydraulic and blade service. The 6000 Series Oil Guard stretches oil intervals to 500 hours.
