Toro TITAN Review

The TITAN is the right pick for larger properties that need faster travel speed, a bigger tank and tougher components than the TimeCutter, without paying Z Master prices.

TITAN review

Where the TITAN sits

The Toro TITAN is the step above the TimeCutter: a heavier frame, larger drive tires, faster transmissions and engines up to 26 hp gross. It is aimed at big residential properties and owners who want something close to a commercial machine. Toro lists the 48-inch at $5,999, the 54-inch at $6,099 to $6,299 and the TITAN MAX 60-inch at $7,599.

This review covers the TITAN line, including the TITAN MAX and TITAN MAX MyRIDE 60-inch models.

Engine and drive

The 48-inch uses a Kawasaki FR691 V-twin at 23 hp gross, and the 54-inch is offered with a Kohler KT745 at 26 hp or a Kawasaki at 23 hp. The TITAN MAX 60-inch lists a 26 hp Kohler, while the MAX MyRIDE page is inconsistent between 26 hp Kohler and 24 hp Kawasaki, so confirm it before buying.

Drive is dual hydrostatic and rear-wheel. The 48 and 54-inch models use a Hydro-Gear ZT2800 and reach 8.5 mph, and the MAX models use a ZT3100 and reach 9.0 mph.

Deck and capacity

Decks are 10-gauge IronForged steel with a welded Grade 50 bumper and cast-aluminum spindles. Cutting height runs 1.5 to 5.0 inches. The commercial-style I-beam front end and four anti-scalp wheels help the deck follow uneven ground.

Fuel capacity is 5 gallons on the 48 and 54-inch and 7 gallons on the MAX 60-inch. Drive tires are 22×11 on the smaller machines and 23×11-12 on the MAX, paired with 13×6.5 casters.

Comfort

A 20-inch gaming-style seat comes on all the models we checked, and the MAX MyRIDE adds suspension isolated from the frame, armrests, a cup holder and Pro-Control dampers. The 54-inch lists steering dampers and a standard suspension platform. ROPS is optional on the 54-inch and standard on the 60-inch MAX pages.

Weight, warranty and who it suits

Weights are 744 lb for the 48-inch, 751 lb for the 54-inch and 839 lb for the MAX 60-inch. The TITAN is not CARB compliant. The warranty is 3 years for residential use, with commercial terms of 300 or 500 hours depending on the page.

Toro states that the 60-inch MAX is suited to up to 7 acres of flat ground with obstacles. Pick the TITAN over the TimeCutter MAX if you want the fastest drive and the largest tank, and choose the Z Master only if you mow for a living or want commercial-grade hydraulics.
