Exmark Lazer Z Review

The Lazer Z is built for daily commercial use, with big tanks, fast drive and a long warranty, at prices several times a residential mower. It is overkill for most home lawns.

Lazer Z review

Exmark Lazer Z: the commercial benchmark

The Lazer Z is Exmark’s flagship commercial zero-turn, built in Beatrice, Nebraska. Exmark sells it in E, S and X-Series trims, plus a battery V-Series and a diesel version. Its page lists cash prices starting at $11,299 for the E-Series, $13,899 for the S, $16,699 for the X, $28,099 for the diesel and $40,499 for the V-Series.

This Exmark Lazer Z review covers the gas line. Exmark’s page gives widths of 48, 52, 60 and 72 inches, and the model pages we read were 52 and 60-inch machines.

Engines and drive

The model pages we read used Kawasaki engines: an FX730V at 23.5 hp, an FX801V at 25.5 hp, and the page also lists FX921V and Vanguard 810 options. Drive is unitized Hydro-Gear pump and motor units.

Speed depends on model: 11 mph on the 52-inch E-Series pages and 10 mph on the 60-inch S-Series page, while the series FAQ says up to 10.5 mph. We treat the model pages as the more specific source.

Deck and cutting

The 52-inch E-Series shows an UltraCut Series 4 side-discharge deck, formed and welded from high-strength steel, with a cutting height of 1.5 to 5.5 inches. The 60-inch S-Series lists 1 to 5.5 inches. Exmark describes a floating deck, and gives blade tip speed up to 18,500 ft/min.

Size and comfort

Fuel capacity is listed as 9.5 gallons on the E-Series pages and 12 gallons on the S-Series 60, against an FAQ figure of up to 11.5. Exmark lists 24×12-12 rear and 13×6.5-6 front tires for the line, an ergonomic suspension seat and quick-adjust ROPS. It does not show weights on the pages we read.

Warranty and fit

The warranty on the models we read is 5 years commercial with a 1,250-hour limit, and no hour limit in the first two years. Buy a Lazer Z if you mow for a living or have many acres. A homeowner with a lawn under three acres will pay far more than a Radius or Quest and use little of the capacity.

Buying information

Price

Where to buy

Warranty

5-year commercial warranty with a 1,250-hour limit; no hour limit during the first 2 years, per the model pages read.

Depreciation and resale

No published resale figures. Exmark's FAQ cites 2,000 to 3,000 or more hours of life with proper maintenance, which is the maker's claim rather than a resale number.

Ownership

Common problems

Spec-based limits: pages disagree on speed (10, 10.5, 11 mph) and tank size (9.5, 11.5, 12 gal), so confirm the exact model. Cost is the main drawback for homeowners.

Maintenance

Oil is SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40, about 2 quarts per Exmark's FAQ. Follow the operator manual for grease points, belts and filters.
