S170 review
John Deere S170 at a glance
The John Deere S170 is the step-up 100 Series tractor for bigger yards. It has a 24 hp V-twin Extended Life Series (ELS) engine and a 48-inch Edge deck. It also gets a heavier Tuff Torq K46 transmission and larger tires. Easy Change oil, cruise control and a lumbar-adjustable seat are included.
Engine and transmission
The engine is a 44.2 cubic inch (724 cc) V-twin with cast-iron liners and overhead valves. The ELS version adds features aimed at longer engine life. Charging output is 14 amps.
The K46 heavy-duty hydrostatic transaxle is the big change from the smaller models. It has cooling fins and a fan. Speed is 0 to 5.5 mph forward and 0 to 3.2 mph in reverse. Cruise control is standard.
Tires, seat and ride
The tractor rides on 16×6.5-8 front tires and tall 22×9.5-12 rear tires. They give better grip and a smoother ride than the 20-inch tires on the smaller models. The tractor weighs 503 lb without fuel.
The seat has a 15-inch back with adjustable lumbar support. It slides 5.5 inches and sits on two coil springs. The steering wheel is 12 inches across. A front bumper is standard.
The 48-inch deck
The deck is built from 12-gauge steel. It has three spindles, four wheels and an easy-level design. Cutting height runs from 1 to 4 inches. Mulching and bagging need optional kits.
The Reverse Implement Option lets you back up with the deck running. That helps with attachments. Towing is rated at 500 lb.
Limits to know about
There is no receiver hitch and no differential lock. There is no 12-volt outlet or backup light. The tank holds 2.4 gallons. The tractor is about 60.8 inches wide with the deck.
