Mower cranks but will not start: where do I begin?

My gas mower turns over but never fires, especially after sitting for a few months. What is a sensible order to check things in?

Work from simplest to hardest. First, fuel: old gasoline is the number one cause. If it has sat for months, drain it and refill with fresh fuel. Next, check that the fuel valve is open and the air filter is clean. Then look at the spark plug (clean, correctly gapped, dry) and confirm the safety switches are satisfied (seat, blade engagement and brake).

If it still will not start, the carburetor may be gummed up from stale fuel and need cleaning. Always disconnect the spark plug wire before working near the blades or engine, and check your owner manual for your model.
