Hydrostatic vs gear drive: what is the real difference?

Spec sheets mention hydrostatic or manual transmissions. What does that mean in day-to-day use?

A hydrostatic transmission uses fluid to vary speed smoothly with pedals or levers, so there is no clutch or shifting. It is easier on a busy mowing day and especially handy with a loader, because you can change direction without shifting. A gear drive uses mechanical gears, is simpler and often cheaper, but you shift or use a clutch to change speed and direction.

For most homeowners, hydrostatic is the more convenient choice. Whichever type you have, follow the maker's service schedule for fluid and filters.
