How often should I sharpen blades and clean the deck?

What is a reasonable maintenance routine for a riding mower used weekly during the season?

Intervals vary by maker, so your owner manual comes first. As a general guide, check the blades before each season and sharpen or replace them when the cut looks ragged, and balance them after sharpening. Clean the underside of the deck after mowing wet grass so clippings do not build up and hold moisture against the steel.

Also check the oil, air filter and tire pressure on the schedule in the manual, and grease any fittings it lists. Always disconnect the spark plug wire before working under the deck.
