Battery will not hold a charge: what should I check?

My tractor clicks or turns over slowly after a few days of sitting. Is it the battery or something else?

Start with the basics: clean and tighten the battery terminals and the ground connection, because corrosion causes many "dead battery" complaints. Charge the battery fully with a suitable charger, then have it load tested at a parts store. A battery that tests weak after a full charge needs replacing.

If the battery is good but it drains over a few days, something may be drawing power while parked (such as a light or accessory), or the charging system is not charging while running. Checking the voltage across the battery with the engine off and then running can point to the charging system. For long storage, a battery maintainer helps.
