Z254 review

Our take on the Husqvarna Z254

The Husqvarna Z254 is an affordable 54-inch zero-turn in the Z200 Series. Husqvarna also lists it as the Z254 (Endurance). It uses a Briggs & Stratton PXi2400 V-twin and a 12-gauge stamped, reinforced deck. Most people searching for a Husqvarna Z254 review are choosing between this mower and the Z254F. The Z254 costs $400 less. The Z254F adds a Kawasaki engine and a fabricated deck.

Engine and drive

The PXi2400 displaces 44.18 cubic inches. It has two cylinders, air cooling and full-pressure lubrication with an oil filter. Husqvarna’s US page does not list horsepower. The earlier Z254i, which used a Briggs Endurance Series engine, was rated at 24 hp. Drive is a Hydro-Gear hydrostatic transmission. Top speed is 6.5 mph forward.

Deck and controls

The 54-inch deck has three blades and four anti-scalp wheels. It also has a wash port, greasable mandrels and a powder-coat finish. Cutting height has six steps from 1.5 to 4 inches. A spring-assisted hand lift raises the deck, and an electric clutch engages the blades. The deck can mulch, bag or discharge to the side with the right attachments.

Comfort and limits

The seat is a 15-inch high-back vinyl design. Armrests are optional. A cup holder and a digital hour meter come standard. The mower weighs 628 lb, and the fuel tank holds 3.5 gallons. There is no roll bar. A removable foot plate gives quick access to the deck for cleanup.

Who should buy it

Buy the Z254 if you want a wide deck at a low Z200 price and mow mostly open lawns. Choose the Z254F if you want a Kawasaki engine and armrests. Look at the Z248F if a 48-inch deck is enough.
