Maverick review

Bad Boy Maverick at a glance

The Maverick is Bad Boy’s residential top-of-line zero-turn, with the quickest drive in the group and suspension at both ends. Do not confuse it with the Maverick HD, which Bad Boy lists as a separate commercial model. This Bad Boy Maverick review covers the standard Maverick in 48, 54 and 60-inch decks.

The maker page gives a payment estimate of about $137 a month and no cash price. One retailer listing we read showed a 60-inch unit with a 27 hp Briggs and Stratton CXi at $7,199, but that engine is not on the current maker page, so treat it as an older or dealer-specific build.

Power and speed

Current engines are a Kohler Confidant ZT740 of 747 cc at 25 hp and a Kawasaki FS730V of 726 cc at 24 hp. Drive comes from dual Hydro-Gear 3200 series integrated systems with a 10 cc transaxle, and the Maverick runs up to 9 mph forward, well above the 6 and 7 mph of the MZ Magnum and ZT Elite.

Deck and cut

The deck is 3/16-inch or 7-gauge solid steel, formed and welded with reinforced edges. Height runs from 1.5 to 4.5 inches using the Deck-Dial foot-assist system. Spindles are PEER maintenance-free, and the PTO is electric with push-button blade start.

Blade size is not published on the page, so we omit it.

Ride and size

The E-Z Ride compression rear suspension is paired with independent front suspension rails on an I-beam front. The seat is a new adjustable comfort unit. Weights are 957, 1,005 and 1,031 lb for the 48, 54 and 60-inch decks, and the tank holds 6.5 gallons.

Rear tires are 23×9-12 on the 48-inch and 23×11-12 on the others, with 13×6.5-6 casters. Overall length is 80 inches. The page lists the front fork as 3/8-inch in one place and 1/2-inch in another, so we do not quote a number.

Warranty and buying advice

Bad Boy’s warranty page lists the standard Maverick at 2 years or 400 hours, double the hours of the MZ and ZT Elite. A retailer listing we read quoted a different engine-based term, so confirm with your dealer.

Choose the Maverick if your lot is large, bumpy or sloped enough to justify a faster, suspended ride, and you accept a heavier machine above 950 lb.

Buying information

Where to buy

Warranty

Per Bad Boy's warranty page: Maverick 2 years or 400 hours from retail sale, deck shell leading edge for life (labor 1 year), seats 2 years, belts 90 days, battery 6 months. Engine covered by its maker. One retailer listing quoted a different term, so confirm with your dealer.

Depreciation and resale

No published resale figures; used pricing depends on dealer demand.

Ownership

Common problems

Spec-based limits: weight above 950 lb increases ground pressure on soft turf, and a retailer listing shows a different engine and warranty from the maker page.

Maintenance

Spindles are maintenance-free. Expect routine oil, filter, belt and blade care, and keep the suspension pivots clean.
